Sunny Phoenix

February 19th, 2009

Arrived yesterday, and although the day was a bit of a long, drawn-out blur, today I woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (but LITERALLY, the cat’s tail was on my face).  Kitty then joined me in a stroll to the window, where together we stared in horror at the gusty winds blowing outside.  Oh oh…..luckily that only lasted a few hours.  By 10am, it was sunny and warm, and we were ready to head to the DesertChihuly cactusBotanical Gardens.  There’s currently a breathtaking exhibit featuring Dale Chihuly, known world-wide for his glass-blown works of art.  The installation is set entirely within the desert garden environment.  Around every twist and bend you could find an unusual display of brightly colored glass amongst the muted tones of the Arizona desert.

I have to admit, even without the exhibition, the landscape here is just unbelievably stunning.  The desert valleys and mountains are dotted with towering seguaro cacti – all hundreds of years old, the rocks range from warm browns to iron reds, the low bush and prickly plants all make for such a rugged atmosphere.  Despite being overly populated, this region just seems vast and endless.   And then there’s the sun….Heavenly!  I think I could actually imagine saying goodbye to Amsterdam and becoming a cowgirl in the “wild west”.  Ach, if it wasn’t for that cute boy I like, and that school where I sometimes study, and that nice man I like to call “pa”, and that place known as “home”.  If it weren’t for those things, I would definitely leave it all behind, and ride off into the Arizona sunset…typical desert scene
